Teenagers who paralysed man in drunken attack walks free

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, left Nicholas Butt, a 26-year-old market analyst, in a coma after the drunken, unprovoked attack in Nottingham on May 16.
Mr Butt, who worked for an internet clothing company, was out celebrating scoring the winning goal with his football team when he was set upon outside a sandwich bar.
Mr Butt was knocked to the ground, cracking his skull on the pavement, leaving him unconscious.
The court heard that surgeons had to cut open the top of his skull to deal with swelling to his brain.
He remained in a coma for months and is now in a rehabilitation.
The boy, who has a troubled background and history of violence, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm yesterday.
As a juvenile the maximum term he could receive for the offence is two years but because of his guilty plea, his remorse and other mitigating factors the term would be reduced to only eight months, the court heard.
He has already spent four months in custody, reducing any jail term further.
Recorder Sean Smith QC told the court that such a sentence would have seen the boy, from Nottingham, released in only a few months without any further formal supervision.
Instead he imposed a two year supervision order, banned him from all licensed premises. He is also subject to a six month curfew and must report to police regularly.
“In no way shape or form would it be useful to anyone if I sent you back home after serving a short sentence with no supervision,” the judge said.
Handing the boy a photograph of his victim, he told him: "Here is a picture of a young man without the top of his head. Unlike you he is not going to live a normal life.
"It is not only Mr Butt but also his family who are going to have to live with the consequence of what you did for the rest of their lives.”
Angela Burrell, Mr Butt’s aunt, accepted the decision but said her family had been devastated by the attack.
“[The judge] has to address the fact that the young man has personal problems but that does very little to address our problems,” she said.
“Nicholas is unlikely to talk or walk ever again.
“It has changed his life forever and that of his family and many friends.”

15-year-old boy critically ill after stabbing

A 15-YEAR-OLD boy was left critically ill after being stabbed in a gang brawl.
He was knifed in the chest after a dozen youths descended on a Huyton park for a fight.
One eyewitness said the group was “like a pack of wolves”.
Two other boys, aged 16 and 15, were today under arrest on suspicion of assault.
The stabbing happened in Alt Park, which is next to Endmoor Road, Huyton, at around 2.15pm yesterday.
A man whose house overlooks the park said: “They were like a pack of wolves, just there, over the bank.
“One of them had his T-shirt off.
“I saw the lad on the stretcher but I did not recognise him.”
Alt Park, which used to be the home of Knowsley United FC, was re-opened in February with a new children’s play area and grassy field.
Some nearby homeowners said it has since become a magnet for black-clad gangs.
One 48-year-old mum told the ECHO: “This has been waiting to happen. There have been several incidents.
“There were a load of fireworks going off, huge noisy bangers thrown down the slide.”
A Merseyside police spokeswoman said: “When emergency services arrived, they found a 15-year-old with serious injuries, consistent with a single stab wound to the chest.
“He was taken to hospital and is described as critical but stable.”
